Un ancien sniper dédit sa vie à sauver massivement des éléphants et des rhinocéros
"Il a décidé d'y consacrer toute sa vie, et c'est réussi."

C'est une histoire qui peut sembler tirée d'un film et pourtant, c'est bien réel. On vous présente aujourd'hui Damien Mander, qui est un être humain exceptionnel. Vous allez comprendre pour quelle raison à la lecture de ces lignes. 

Plongeur-démineur, tireur d'élite dans les forces spéciales, ex-sniper, parti plusieurs fois en mission dans le cadre de son travail, il a décidé de dédier sa vie à autre chose. Amoureux des animaux, l'australien a décidé de consacrer sa vie à déjouer le braconnage. 

C'est lors d'un voyage en Afrique, en constatant le massacre de nombreux animaux et la manière dont ceux-ci étaient tués, qu'il a décidé de changer de vie. 

Il a raconté: 

''Après l'Irak, je cherchais une nouvelle aventure et [un voyage en Afrique] me semblait être une chose à faire pour six mois. Lorsque j'ai voyagé à travers le continent, j'ai été inspiré par le travail que faisaient les rangers. Ils ont quelque chose qui vaut vraiment la peine de se battre : tout abandonner, être loin de leur famille pendant si longtemps chaque année pour défendre le monde naturel. Je venais d'arriver d'Irak où nous nous occupions des pointillés sur une carte et des ressources dans le sol et cela m'a fait réfléchir sur qui j'étais en tant que personne"

Il a ensuite fondé une académie pour former les rangers au Zimbabwe, ainsi que L'International Anti-Poaching Foundation (fondation contre le braconnage, l'IAPF).

Son but? Empêcher le braconnage, trouver les gens qui en sont coupables. Il ajoute: 

'"La capacité de rallier la population locale, de rallier les cœurs et les esprits, c'est plus important que tout et c'est une chose à laquelle nous avons complètement échoué en Irak. Nous sommes capables de prendre ces échecs de l'Irak et de les transformer en positif."

Depuis ses initiatives, aucun rhinocéros n'a été braconné en huit ans dans le secteur dans lequel il oeuvre, au parc Kruger. 

À un certain moment, il a cependant décidé qu'il devait changer de stratégie s'il voulait que sa fonctionne:

"On sauvait des rhinocéros et on faisait la guerre à la population locale sur un continent qui comptera deux milliards d'habitants en 2040."

Il a donc décidé de rallier des femmes à sa cause. Le groupe en comportait 16 au début, elles seront près de 300 d'ici la fin de l'année 2020. Elles sont essentiellement des victimes du Sida ou de violences. 

En conclusion, il ajoute:

"Nous sommes l'une des millions d'espèces sur cette planète, mais nous sommes les seuls à déterminer le niveau de souffrance et de destruction qui est acceptable pour toutes les autres [...] Nous sommes assis ici à parler de l'extinction de différentes espèces, mais la réalité est que si nous ne nous occupons pas de cette magnifique planète que l'on nous a donnée, ce n'est pas l'éléphant ou le rhinocéros qui va s'éteindre ; ce sera nous."

Two operations net 9 arrests over the past 24 hours. Acting on information obtained by #IAPF’s #Akashinga team in the Lower Zambezi Valley, Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZPWMA) and Police from Makuti Police Station raided the staff barracks of the local Ministry of Roads Department. There, illegal bush meat was seized and 5 male suspects, aged between 21 and 60, were arrested and handed over to the Minerals Flora and Fauna Unit (MFFU) at Kariba. Around the same time, three suspects were arrested while trying to sell a zebra and serval skin in Karoi to undercover operatives. The three suspects who were arrested in a joint operation with Karoi’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) lead officials to a fourth suspect who is responsible for the heavy caliber rifle that was used for the killings. The four were remanded in custody to appear in court. Arresting people is certainly not the fun part of the job, especially when we are too late to save an animal. However, there has been a sharp downturn in poaching activities and the relentless persistence by our teams is making it harder and harder to for poachers to operate. As the Akashinga ranger teams return from their patrols, they log what wildlife has been encountered. They speak with excitement and joy because they can see and sometimes touch the results of their hard work. When we first arrived at Phundundu in August 2017 it was a hunting reserve that was no longer able to sustain hunting operations due to the lack of wildlife. It was only a matter of time before it was lost to human settlement, as the community had no incentive to motivate conservation. In those early days, we would see a solitary animal as little as once a week. Today’s report from three of the patrols that came back to HQ logged: - - Team Alpha: 50 elephants, 1 buffalo, 4 duikers, fresh tracks of eland and kudu - - Team Bravo: 3 kudu, 3 elephants, one hyena and another small herd of 3 kudu - - Team Charlie: 20 eland, 1 duiker, 1 bush buck and another herd of 8 eland. - - A few days ago in camp we had both leopard and lion, and last week even a live pangolin. - - Turning Phundundu into a Community Wildlife Sanctuary has not only benefitted wildlife, but also the community who now reap the benefits of the program. All of our rangers, scouts, cooks, drivers, builders and maintenance crew come directly from the community bordering the reserve. This employment of over 80 people is coupled with the purchase of as much program related goods and services as possible and plays a key role in driving nature conservation. - - There are many areas in Zimbabwe that were like Phundundu. In long-term partnerships with the Rural District Council’s and local communities, we plan to collectively keep transforming such places into wildlife havens. The end is just the beginning. After roughly 5 months of blood, sweat and tears, these rangers have graduated as LEAD Rangers as part of our LEADRanger program. We are immensely proud that all students, who had gone through a selection process prior to attending, made the cut. This is exceptional, as the standards and the pace have been high. These role models have returned to their own protected areas (two of which are Akashinga rangers) as qualified instructors and leaders, ready to work with their fellow rangers.
